Route overview for Weskustoer 2018 Stage 1, on Wednesday 23 May 2018
Riebeeck to Elandsbaai
This is the longest stage of our tour, starting inland and finishing at the ocean. Welcome to the Weskustoer. Leave from Riebeek Valley Hotel on the R311 towards Moorreesburg. After 27km turn right onto the N7 to Piketberg. Breakfast stop in Piketberg (approx 60km done). In town, while look towards the mountain, turn right onto the R366 towards Elandsbaai. Less than 100km remain till we reach the sea. You can see Piekenierskloof pass in the distance and to your right; Eland next to the road and the waters of Verlorenvlei as we near the finish line.
Elands Bay is a small coastal town on the Atlantic Ocean, about 220 kilometres (two and a half hours drive) north from Cape Town. It is a major surfing location and is also noted for its caves, which have a number of rock paintings. In 2009, Heritage Western Cape declared the Elands Bay Cave and most of Baboon Point (Cape Deseada), on which it is located, as a provincial heritage site. Eland’s Bay along with much of this coastline is an important bird habitat. The local wetland, Verlorenvlei, is a Ramsar wetland.
