Route description for Tour de Vine 2018 Stage 1, on Monday 12 March 2018
Franschhoek to Slanghoek
What a way to start the Tour. If you haven’t warmed up yet, you’ll certainly be so by the time you get to the top of Franschhoek pass. Remember to look back over your should for a last glance of the valley before we head over towards Theewaterskloof dam. Continue to the T-junction and swing left, through Villiersdorp, refill at the water point and over the hill to one of our favourite fast sections towards Aan-de-Doorns. Get a couple of minutes worth of shade here before we continue through Rawsonville and over the N1 National Road to finish at the very start of the Slanghoek Valley. Kudos if you can muster the climb up Goudini Spa all the way to your accommodation in Slanghoek Villas. Oh, what a view.
Olifantshoek? Lamprechts road? Franschhoek Pass.
And after the WP on the outskirts of Villiersdorp lies this little gem – easy up, fast descent.
At the end of the Slanghoek Valley road, Rawsonville is a small wine growing and farming community. It lies in a scenic part of the Breede River Valley, on the eastern flanks of the Du Toitskloof Mountains, 90km East of CPT and 15km West or Worcester. The climate is hinterland (further from oceanic influences, more inland) Mediterranean, with cool, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. The area is known for the Breedekloof Wine Route with its 22 Cellars and Wine Estates. The economy is reliant on serving the agricultural community, but tourism is growing fast.
